History

I was born to two different people, from two different worlds. At times, I thought whether or not I'm a product of coincidence, and maybe I am. But it doesn't matter. I've come this far to realize that this journey was never for nothing. Whether I'm still king or not, I'll always bear the responsibility of protecting this world, from the surface to the depths.
--Aquaman

Arthur Curry (born January 1980) was the son of Atlanna, then Queen of Atlantis, and Tom Curry, an American fisherman and lighthouse keeper. Not long before Atlanna was crowned queen, she fled from home after feeling conflicted about her arranged marriage with the prestigious Atlantean captain, Orvax Marius, and as she mindlessly swam into the stormy and torrential regions of the Atlantic, Atlanna ended up rescuing Tom from his capsizing boat while heading home after fishing. After getting to know each other well, these two people from two different worlds would fall in love and, from that, Arthur was born. Atlanna and Tom had hopeful plans as a loving family, only for the former's harsh reality to strike back when both her responsibilities and perils as a royal member of Atlantis had threatened any future she had with Tom and baby Arthur, reluctantly and tearfully leaving both of them in order to protect them from the dangers of her world and keep them from bothering or endangering the Curry family in the surface world by prioritizing her duties as the newly appointed queen of Atlantis in hopes of uniting her people and nation with the rest of the Seven Seas, and one day, the seas with the surface world even though it was wishful thinking.

Despite feeling heartbroken by his lover's departure, Tom continued raising Arthur mostly within his hometown—Amnesty Bay, Maine—until he reached late adolescence, where Arthur slowly found out about his maternal lineage, affirming the instances of him being capable of communicating with marine life at the aquarium or the bay since he was a child. Although Arthur's father had his associate Dr. Stephen Shin study his son and help him understand his abilities, Arthur would receive plentiful training from then-current Atlantean Royal Advisor himself, Nuidis Vulko, who was sent to train him as a warrior at the request of the queen, Arthur's mother, believing that he could one day be welcomed and integrated into their underwater nation once Arthur was older, perhaps even be its future heir, as Atlanna had hoped. Although Vulko tried to make Arthur understand why Atlanna could not visit him herself since their nation was facing struggles in power, the latter didn't take it too well and became more and more distant from Vulko and continued living as a "semi normal" man in the surface world, ending his training and mentorship under the Atlantean advisor.

But despite this drift between his mother's world and his own, Arthur would begin using his aquatic powers to help and protect his fellow humanity from dangers across the globe, as well as exploring each and every corner of any sea or ocean whenever he wanted to have time for himself. Since he kept himself mostly anonymous during his saves and adventures, Arthur could only be met or encountered by a few locals from various coastal and seaside towns of his visit, some of who even revered him as a god and some idolized him as a heroic figure who hails from the depths of the ocean. By 2006, Arthur's gradually growing praise, including a wholehearted and loving encouragement from his father, and following for his selfless actions as a water-dwelling vigilante earned him the moniker Aquaman. Operating during the rise of superheroes, Arthur's crimefighting on both the surface world and underwater got him on the radar of malevolent criminals and suspect authorities alike, but he would also meet and gain superpowered friends and allies, most notably the Justice League—who recruited him during their first encounter and alliance—and Atlanteans among other aquatic individuals who knew and respected his mother aside from Vulko, such as his first protege and sidekick Garth, the playful yet determined undersea activist Dolphin, and then Xebelian Princess Mera, who Arthur would mutually fall in love with despite their earlier quarrels.

While he was acquainted with some Atlanteans for a couple of years, his royal heritage had yet to be revealed to the entire populace and most of the royal families, save for Mera and Arthur's younger half-brother, Orm Marius. The discovery of Arthur and his reputation on both worlds threatened Orm, initiating a great rivalry between brothers when he found out that their own mother was executed by Orvax, who had her thrown into the region of the Trench out of envy and outrage, allowing for Orm to take over the thrown after his father's passing. When Arthur was hunted down by Orm's men in Atlantis and hired mercenaries from the surface world, he formed a small alliance with Mera, Vulko, Dolphin, Garth, and Tula, as they worked together to help him challenge Orm and prove his worthiness as a leader to the Atlantean people before his half-brother would set his spiteful and destructive plans against the surface world in motion and potentially start a war between both civilizations.

Notes

  • Although Arthur gained the title Aquaman around the spring of 2006, he was already operating as a sea-dwelling vigilante and responder for about two years and had only received various names in several languages from the coastal towns he respectfully visited and people he saved.
