History

Unlike that foil who pestered your uncle's life, I never wanted to ruin yours. But you... You just believed you could keep on running like you can be free of stakes and consequences. Your life wasn't molded by tragedy... You were incomplete, and you needed something to be your own man. Your own negative... Since my rebirth, I can only hope you'll see that I've made you a better hero than you could ever possibly imagine.

Hunter Zolomon (born April 1985) had a troubled childhood, but it was the case due to the fact that he was a victim of dysfunctional parenting in the form of his abusive father James, who tormented both him and his mother, Georgia, due to his erratic behavior. After returning home on a weekend while Hunter was still in high school, he witnessed his father murder his mother after a heated argument. A heartbroken and frightened Hunter called the police and when they arrived at the scene, Hunter's dad committed suicide in front of them after being surrounded, traumatizing him even more. What made the situation worse was the discovery that his father was a serial killer, and his mother confronted him about his crimes on that tragic night.

Seeking to avoid repeating the same or a similar type of tragedy that he went through with other civilians, Hunter studied criminology and psychology in college and joined the FBI after graduation, where he would end up meeting the love of his life, Detective Ashley Fox. After years of a fruitful and blossoming relationship, they would eventually get engaged and even happily thought about their future together as a married couple.

However, all it took one night for their hopeful and optimistic dreams to be shattered by another tragedy. While chasing down the costumed meta criminal Lyle Corley, who took on the moniker Trickster not longer after James Jesse's arrest, Hunter made the most grave mistake when he, Ashley, and her father Lieutenant Derek Fox went after Corley believing that he wouldn't have a firearm up his sleeve. Corley revealed his handgun the moment they faced him, maniacally firing at the captain and shooting Hunter at the leg. Heartbroken and vengeful, Ashley shot the Trickster dead before he could've finished Hunter with more gunshots. She called off their wedding, although she stayed with him even after losing her father. Hunter's position was terminated by his employers for making the grave call during the chase of the Trickster and, eventually, he snapped at her, believing that he was nothing but a liability to her. She would leave him due to his erratic yet depressing behavior, realizing that she couldn't bear watching her love ruin his own life.

Living on his own, Hunter moved to Keystone City around 2015 and started a new profession as a profiler in the police department, but his position became much more integral as he got promoted a year later into the KCPD's Department of Metahuman Hostilities and first encountered the Flash and his sidekick, Kid Flash. His partnerships with them made Hunter another addition to their network of allies mainly based in S.T.A.R. Labs, Team Flash. In the next three years, he became more involved with the world of superheroes, although his partnerships resulted in some disagreements, especially with how the speedsters and their allies have dealt with criminal groups such as the Rogues, where the original Trickster—James Jesse—was a member of before his eventual retirement.

At times, Hunter criticized and questioned the Scarlet Speedster about letting the Rogues and other dangerous metahuman criminals away despite having extraordinary powers themselves. Because of this, Wally eventually revealed his identity to Hunter when he first took on the mantle of the Flash after his predecessor's apparent demise, hoping that Hunter would start trusting him and his allies more if they cleared out any misunderstandings between each other. From that point on, they two would get closer as friends and partners in crime solving.

Unfortunately, the worst of their dispute would come during their joint mission against the metahuman serial killer, Cicada, who tried talking people such as Hunter into joining or supporting his cause due to his history against meta criminals like the second Trickster. Although he considered hearing out his cause, Hunter knew that Cicada was criminally insane and sought to turn him into the authorities. However, the villain retaliated by injuring Hunter in a manner that left him paralyzed from the waist down, leaving him to be rescued by the Flash before the latter confronted Cicada. Hunter was honored and hailed as a hero during the incident, but he started feeling spite and discontent within him, believing that he would never be good enough to do good, especially in his state. He slowly began to compare himself and the Flash, prompting him to consider the possibility of getting his life back if he had similar powers as his.

He begged for Wally to replicate the same process that granted him powers in hopes that it would heal his injuries and be able to save innocent lives from dangerous rogues like he used to. Wally declined out of his friend's safety, worried that the process could end up making him worse, if not kill him. Embittered, envious, and desperate, Hunter took the matters into his own hands and snuck inside the newly opened Flash Museum to use the Cosmic Treadmill and other equipment, including the chemicals he brought, that could imitate the same experiment that granted speedsters access to the Speed Force. The only thing was, his attempt went off the rails in a matter of minutes as the treadmill blows up in front of him in a fashion akin to the original S.T.A.R. Labs Particle Accelerator Explosion of 2002. The combination of the explosion and him being doused in various chemicals disconnected him from the timestream.

Believing himself to be dead and had gone into the afterlife at first, Hunter realized that he could manipulate time at will, "zooming" in and out of history until he returned to the present once he got the hang of his powers. Presumed dead by the public, Hunter saw the incident as being reborn and from that point on forward, he became hell-bent on making Wally a superior hero and a better, if not the best, Flash by giving him something he believed the latter never had before, unlike his mentor and predecessor and other heroes before him: a tragedy.
