History
Mayhap there was a reason I was brought here. I was about to charge towards the face of death in the midst of my crumbling planet, yet I was reborn on another. At first, I felt lost, but the longer I blended in and learned by living among them, I saw aspects of my people in humanity... Their ambitions, hubris, spectacles, humility, and love. Failing Mars always haunts me, but I cannot let the people of Earth annihilate themselves, like ours did, nor can I ever let them be vulnerable to marauders and conquerors from above.
J'onn J'onzz (born November 1755) was a prodigy not only to his own family, but also to the rest of the Green Martians. Despite graduating from his highest educational institution in modern Martian civilization with one of the highest marks of any student in the last few decades, something that would've given him enough access and opportunity to live a far more luxurious and privileged life, J'onn devoted most of his adulthood by serving and protecting his community as a fair, humble, and upstanding Manhunter, which is most comparable to Earth's police officers and other first responder and peacekeeper professions across other civilized planets. Later in his life, he fell in love with a Martian physician and scientist named M'yri'ah, who he would eventually marry and have two daughters with, named K'hym and T'ania.
Due to his lasting consistent and top-notch service in the public sector, J'onn was eventually recruited into the Association of the Highest Intelligence, a interspecies Martian league consisting of geniuses and leaders dedicated to solving the global issues of the Martian races. However, a mad scientific White Martian by the name of Protex began his crusade to save their planet from catastrophe and extinction by involving conflict and genocide against the other Martian subspecies, most especially the Green Martians, who Protex harbored a deep hatred against since their esteemed intelligence often bruised his ego and made him insecure as a White Martian. Such fiery hatred motivated Protex, his puppet commander Blanx, and his followers, collectively called the Imperium, to enact their plans on the Martian surface by releasing a reverse-engineered H'ronmeer's Curse, a psychic plague that was originally an invention of Green Martian crazed scientist Ma'alefa'ak. This curse had proven to be more lethal and infectious than the original strain, infecting the more densely populated regions of Martian cities and slowly killing them, including J'onn's wife, daughters, and relatives.
Heartbroken by the loss of his family and people, J'onn sought to avenge them by going directly to war, regardless of the fact that the war against the Imperium was already a losing battle. But deep inside, J'onn didn't matter if he would end up dying on the battlefield in the face of death against the White Martian extremists, because he charged into the front lines, until vanishing from the face of his planet just as Protex's Imperium bombarded the charging soldiers of the Martian Alliance with waves of incendiary bombs, burning and eradicating the entire division that J'onn served with.
Pulled across space and time by the transmitter machine developed by scientist Dr. Saul Erdel, J'onn would find out that he was the last known living survivor of the Great Martian Extinction, realizing that the bombardment that killed his family was only the beginning of his civilization's destruction. Living on Earth since mid-20th century, J'onn felt lost with finding his own identity since he had no other choice but to blend in with the rest of the human race under various aliases of people who have either passed recently, or amalgamated identities from people he knew or have studied about for centuries, including Dr. Erdel, who befriended J'onn and helped him find his place in the world until his passing.
Still embodying his courageous and altruistic spirit in human's world while reminiscing about his past occupation as a Manhunter back on Mars, J'onn used his powers of shape-shifting to operate as a crime-fighting vigilante and just like his human identities, he went more than one heroic persona throughout the centuries, with the first original moniker that he had made being Bronze Wraith, becoming a member of the post-Justice Society of America team, dubbed the Justice Experience from the late 1960s to the late 1970s. Unfortunately, a tragedy came to them while dealing with the villain Doctor Trap, who tricked each and every one of the members into entering their own demises through twisted death traps. Only Bronze Wraith was able to survive the ordeal, and while he was able to track down and apprehend Trap, the experience left him traumatized and guilt-ridden for losing his teammates because he was the only one who could've shape-shifted his way out of hiding and save them in time.
Since the disbandment of the Justice Experience, J'onn renounced his acts of heroism due to the hauntings of his fallen comrades and deemed himself as foolish for trying to be like who he was in the past. Although he still couldn't bear to see innocent lives in danger, J'onn continued to serve justice against wrongdoers and protect civilians as a detective and later on, a private investigator as he finally settled on John Jones, his name anglicized, to be his legal human name. After getting transferred in Middleton Police Department in Colorado, he became partners with fellow detective, Diane Meade, who J'onn befriended and developed a mentor and mentee type relationship with since she was still a younger rookie. As Jones, he rarely shape-shifted into any other form, aside from his true form in secret, unless he had no other choice. Depending on the situation, he initially took on various forms, varying from creatures of myth and legend, which garnered sightings and fueled conspiracy theories and misinformation across the news and internet that either/and covered or speculated their origins, not realizing that they were all the forms of one Green Martian. From the late 20th century until the early 21st, J'onn kept his own pledged to bring peace and justice in his adopted world, and while he often made attempts to search for any possible whereabouts of his people out there, living in other planets and distant galaxies, he remained on Earth as a vigilante and peacekeeper.
But eventually, one of the deadliest figures of his civilization came back to him in the present in the form of White Martian extremists called Hyperclan. The discovery of this secret invasion led J'onn to crossing paths with six other superheroes who caught each other's attention due to this impending conflict in the making: The Flash, Hawkgirl, Green Lantern, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman. Yet despite J'onn's fear of losing these heroes, he kept on working with them in order to fulfill their shared objective of defending the planet and all life from the incoming threat at all costs, with J'onn being determined to prevent humanity from facing the same fate as his own people. The conflict against Hyperclan pushed J'onn to reveal his true form to the heroes in order to fully fight against the invaders of Earth, becoming a hero in his own right and earning the title Martian Manhunter.
Powers and Abilities
Powers
- Martian Physiology: The average Martian possesses the following power set:
- Extrasensory Input: Nine different senses.
- Martian Vision: Eyesight which extends the visible spectrum, visual acuity, and allows sight through most objects and barriers. Martian Vision is also similar to Kryptonian heat vision in that it can cause combustible objects to explode.
- Flight: The ability defy gravity and fly through sheer force of will. This ability is psionic in nature, and functions similarly to tactile telekinesis.
- Invulnerability: With the exception of fire, they are invulnerable to nearly all physical attacks. This is due primarily to their shape-shifting talents and the ability to increase the density of their molecular structure.
- Longevity
- Malleable Form: Psionic control over their physical form, even down to the molecular level. As a form of shape-shifting, this power enables a Martian to contort their physical structure to adopt human form, elongate limbs, grow to immense size, and so on. They can also change the substance and material from which their body is made of. This allows them to produce weapons and clothing of any type. They can maintain the selected form for an indeterminate amount of time without undue risk or strain. This ability allows for the folowing powers:
- Intangibility: The ability to decrease their molecular density to become incorporeal and thus able to pass through solid objects, as well as increase it to become tougher and stronger.
- Invisibility: The ability to bend light waves around their bodies, rendering them invisible to most forms of human detection. Through this byproduct of shape-shifting, they can also alter their body's temperature, allowing them to become invisible to most forms of electronic detection.
- Size Alteration
- Regeneration: The ability to rapidly heal wound, from minor cuts to regrowing lost limbs. This include the regrowth of major body parts such as the head, heart, or similar primary organs.
- Self-Sustenance: Negating the need to consume food or drink. This also eliminates the need to produce waste.
- Superhuman Speed: Either through flight or natural movement, they can maintain the speed and reflexes far in excess to that of a standard Earth human.
This also allows: - Superhuman Endurance: Their endurance is just as formidable as their strength or invulnerability. When not in the presence of fire, they can operate under extreme conditions for an indeterminate period of time without showing signs of fatigue. The exact range of this power is unknown. When in the presence of fire, this endurance diminishes greatly.
- Superhuman Strength: While the exact range of magnitude of a Martian strength is unknown, it is generally accepted that their strength levels easily surpass the capacity to lift 100 tons. This ranks them in the same strength level as a Kryptonian under a yellow sun.
- Telepathy: The ability to read the minds of others and project their thoughts to varying degrees. They can also project their mental essences into a gestalt community known as the "Great Mind". Through this, the community can enhance the telepathic strength of other Martians. This power can also enable them to reverse the effects of amnesia or psychological brainwashing. A Martian's expertise with telepathy varies from Martian to Martian. Some Martians, such as J'onn J'onzz, can use their ability with such precision that they can extract repressed memories from a subject regardless of how dormant the memory may lie.
- Mind Control: As an extension of their telepathic powers, they can also use the ability to alter a subject's psychological profile, enabling them to manipulate, and in some cases, outright control their chosen target. This practice is greatly discouraged however, and only rarely used.
