History

Flying Graysons

Dick was a nine-year-old circus acrobat, the youngest member of a family troupe of trapeze artists called "The Flying Graysons" who performed for Haly's Circus. Trained from birth, Dick joined his parents when he was four years old as part of their performance. One Father's Day performance, while on tour in Gotham City, Dick overheard Tony Zucco, a small time but feared crime lord, threaten the circus for protection money to fund his drug trafficking operations. The owner, C.C. Haly, refused, and that night, Dick watched in horror as the trapeze cable snapped and his parents fell to their deaths. Dick blamed himself for what happened since he didn't warn his parents soon enough, while Gotham's elite watched the chaos unfold.

Becoming a Hero

Shortly after the tragedy, Bruce Wayne rescued Dick by adopting him as his surrogate son. Frustrated by the lack of attention he was receiving from his new surrogate father, and the mystery surrounding his parents' deaths, Dick was a bit apprehensive of what was going on in his life now, until he found a bat stuck behind the grandfather clock in the study of Wayne Manor. On freeing it, he discovered the secret entrance to the Batcave, and deduced correctly that his surrogate father was Batman. Bruce then told Dick that Zucco murdered his parents and it was made to look like an accident, but forbade the boy from taking Zucco on himself, fearing that he would be seriously injured or worse. However once Batman wound up captured by Zucco, Dick took matters into his own hands and designed his own costume off of spare body armor pieces and his acrobat costume, before tracking Zucco and Batman down, rescuing his surrogate father and avenging his parents' deaths, resulting in Zucco's arrest. Seeing a reflection of himself in Dick; that he could temper compassion with a thirst for justice, Batman gave the boy the chance of a lifetime: to become his protégé. Dick chose the name Robin, and late that night, they swore an oath that they would fight together against crime and corruption, never swerving from the path of justice. Batman realized that for the first time in his career, he wasn't alone in his crusade.
